arica_overview

Since Arica was midway en route to Cusco, Peru, I made a pit stop here. After miles upon miles of desert - eureka - water!

A Spanish word you quickly learn in Chile is: terremoto (earthquake). A big one (8.8 Richter scale) in the Conception/Santiago area Feb. 27, 2010, included 13 days of aftershocks. I was in Cachi, Argentina, that day and experienced five seconds of rumbling. Several days later I left Calama, Chile, on a bus to Arica, a 6.3 quake shook that city that afternoon.
