Then the reason I went to Slovenia—hiking in the mountains! The bus driver told me where to get off after a short ride out of Bled. Then the hiking started. Tip: Don't follow the big yellow signs that say Gorje (thinking that meant gorge). I did, and it added a mile to my jaunt by the time I backtracked. After winding my way through a little town and following the RIGHT signs, the park entrance loomed up (700 SIT/$3.50). A narrow, hand-railed pathway follows a rushing river. Surrounded by rock, greenery and coolness, it was nirvana. The waterfall at the end was less than spectacular, but getting there was bliss. I met an Irish family there and ended up having beers with them at the end of the day. I had taken a path over the mountains toward Bled—another great hike through narrow forested paths, including steep ascents (for out-of-shape me). I sat down at a bus stop to rest, when the Irish family passed me in their car; their house was next to this bus stop on the outskirts of Bled.
