What I hadn't seen before were the remains of the port the allies built in Arromanches. Cherbourg and Le Havre ports had already been bombed to bits, so with meticulous planning, a new port was set up from units shipped over from England. Otherwise, there would have no backup support for the troops that landed. The pop-up port allowed for trucks, tanks, munitions, food and supplies to continue on to Paris.
