| Formal schools have always been alien to the tribe (Santals). They have their traditional ways of imparting knowledge to their children, be it cultural expression (music, dance) or agricultural methods. Plus, families simply can't afford schooling. They don't see the need to send their young ones away to school, nor do they want to send them away. Another obstacle is that teachers don't know their culture or language so the children quickly become disinterested...or teachers don't show up, a common problem in India's poor areas. First Light teaches English so that the children will be better prepared for the outside world. |
