Valley of the Kings
| Most significant monuments are on the east bank of the Nile. The west bank is for death and tombs. The Valley of the Kings west of Luxor is a labyrinth of 63 (so-far discovered) tombs carved into limestone between the 16th abd 11th centuries BC, including the recently discovered grave of the child king, Tutankhamen. Tombs range from a simple pit to 120 rooms. Priests controlling this area kept it very secret; they would deal only with those who could afford burial there. More here. |
