The twin temples originally were carved out of the mountainside in the 13th century BC. Ramses II wanted to commemorate his "victory" in the Battle of Kadesh (Syrian history says Syria won) and intimidate Nubians, ethnic neighbors. Many contemporary Nubians were displaced by Lake Nasser.
