Cuba trip
This Cuban ambulance – a boney horse accompanied by two muscular men who could lift the patient onto it – rescued a woman in our excursion group who broke her leg. A veterinarian herself, Sabrina oversaw assembly of a makeshift cast to hold her dangling foot onto her leg for the nearly two-hour trip down. Luckily, she was a seasoned rider. The rest of us continued the trip down slippery clay paths not unlike those that caused her malheur. We found her sitting in the minivan that brought us to Humboldt park, leg propped up, for the trip to the clinic in Baracoa. The next day she was transported to Santiago – this time in a real ambulance – opting to return to her native Germany for surgery needed.
