Mercifully, the Leifeng pagoda had an escalator, as I had been out walking all day and this was the last stop. This modern convenience was included when it was rebuilt in 2002. Originally built in 975, it was burned by Japanese pirates, then a superstition about healing qualities prompted people to take bricks away and it totally collapsed. Its five stories are atop underground excavations that yielded lots of history.
