Another high point in Beijing was meeting up with Dehong, a Chinese artist friend of a friend in Paris. Barney, our mutual Paris friend helped Dehong with housing when he came to Paris to study art in 1982. His wife, Liyu, came several years later, a nine-day train ride with a toddler. They remain in contact and thus, the connection. They took me for Peking duck at a restaurant reputed for the dish, and we walked along Dashilar hutong, one of the oldest commercial streets in Beijing, also site of Beijing's first cinema house shown below. I look forward to seeing Dehong and Liyu again in May when they come to Paris for an exhibit of Dehong's work.
